“One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.” – Tom Wolfe
It’s hard to describe New York. It’s loud, but you can find the most peaceful spots in parks or tree-lined streets. The people can be crass and seem mean, but they look out for each other and help each other when needed. The weather can be moodier than a teenage girl; one day you can enjoy a warm spring day with bright flowers, the next day bring a fog and overcast that lasts for a week.
I never had any intention of moving to New York. I had even less intention of falling in love with the city. With the traffic. With the people. With the way you can hear five languages on one city block. With how you can go to China for dinner and Italy for dessert. You can go hiking and biking in the middle of sky scrapers. Anything you want to do, there’s a place for it in New York.
I’m not ready to leave this magical place. It grabbed hold of my heart far quicker than I expected it to. There’s something in the city that gives you hope. You can be down on your luck seven ways to Sunday, but take a walk through Greenwich Village, or Midtown, or Central Park.. watch parents push kids in strollers or on the swings, watch the elderly couple gingerly walk down the sidewalk, hand in hand, enjoying their afternoon stroll.
My advice to everyone is to move to New York. Even if it’s just for a brief time like me. Or if you’re lucky enough, spend years here. There’s a magic in the air that will breathe life into your soul and that is something everyone should experience.
“I get out of the taxi and it’s probably the only city which in reality looks better than on the postcards.” – Milos Forman
